Sport has the power to change lives. The ability to drive gender equality by teaching women and girls teamwork, self-reliance, resilience and confidence. For centuries, sports have been dominated by men. However, in recent decades, women athletes have been breaking down the barriers of gender inequality and becoming some of the most famous names in their respective sports.
Throughout sports history, women of color are often forgotten. It’s hard enough for women’s sports to get equal coverage, but that doesn’t take away from the tremendous contributions made by Black women athletes. Women of color have often had to stand on their own, Having faced many obstacles over time and being a Black woman has presented its fair share of challenges. But no matter the circumstances, Black women have prevailed to become champions - breaking records at the highest stages of competition.
MOCHA celebrates the achievements of women of color in sports and how their success set the foundation for the next generation. Whether they were the first to do it or the ones who did it best, Black women have and will continue to leave their mark in sports history. We hope you enjoy this issue. We hope to encourage and enlighten the next generation of leaders in sports and beyond.
